It's tempting to opt for the cheapest option, but when it comes to your health, quality matters. Choosing supplements should be a deliberate process that prioritises your well-being over cost savings. In this article, we present a comprehensive 9-point checklist to help you select the cleanest nutritional supplements that align with your health goals.

1. Ingredients Transparency

Choose supplements from manufacturers that provide clear, detailed ingredient lists. Transparency indicates a commitment to quality and allows you to make informed decisions about what you're putting into your body.

2. Synthetic-Free Assurance

Look for products that explicitly state "synthetic-free" or "no artificial additives." Avoiding synthetic additives can reduce the risk of adverse reactions and promote overall health.

3. Third-Party Certifications

Prioritise supplements with third-party certifications, such as NSF International or USP Verified. These certifications ensure that products are independently tested for purity, quality, and accurate labeling.

4. Minimal Additives

Opt for supplements with minimal additives. A short ingredient list reduces the likelihood of hidden synthetic compounds and unnecessary fillers.

5. Whole Food Sources

Choose supplements made from whole food sources or those derived from natural ingredients. These are more likely to be free from synthetic additives and provide nutrients in a form the body recognises.
6. Non-GMO and Organic

Select supplements labeled as non-GMO (not genetically modified) and organic whenever possible. Organic products adhere to stricter standards and are less likely to contain synthetic pesticides or additives.

7. Research the Manufacturer

Thoroughly research the reputation and history of the supplement manufacturer. Companies with a commitment to quality sourcing and manufacturing practices are more likely to produce clean supplements.

8. Consult a Healthcare Professional

Before introducing new supplements into your routine, consult a healthcare professional. Their expertise can guide you toward supplements that align with your health goals and potential interactions with medications.

9. Customer Reviews and Testimonials

Read customer reviews and testimonials from reputable sources. Real-world experiences can offer insights into the effectiveness and quality of the supplements you're considering.

Selecting nutritional supplements shouldn't be a hasty decision based solely on cost. The quality of supplements you choose can impact your health and well-being. By adhering to this 9-point checklist, you can make informed choices that prioritize clean, high-quality supplements that support your journey to better health. Remember, investing in your well-being today can lead to a healthier tomorrow.

Your liver is crucial in fat loss and energy.. so much so that if your liver is sick or unhealthy you will likely be unable to shift fat.

Everyone knows the liver is essential for detoxification, but do you know the Liver's massive significance in the metabolism, in turn affecting how and where we store fat and of course the ability to produce energy.

Here are 7 reasons why the health of your liver is essential in order to help you reach the healthiest version of you

1. Fat metabolism

The liver is responsible for processing and metabolising dietary fats as well as stored fats in the body. It breaks down triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol, which are utilized as energy sources by various tissues. This process is crucial for mobilising and utilising fat stores and if it fails to do so the weight has no choice but to stay put.

2 Bile production

The liver produces bile, a substance necessary for the digestion and absorption of dietary fats. Bile emulsifies fats, breaking them down into smaller droplets that can be more efficiently acted upon by digestive enzymes in the intestines. Adequate bile production and flow are essential for the effective breakdown and absorption of dietary fats, but when the liver is under stress or is being compromised its ability to produce bile waivers. This results in fats remain undigested in the body to cause harm.

3. Gluconeogenesis

The liver plays a key role in maintaining blood glucose levels during times of low carbohydrate intake, cue the Atkins and keto diets and The Body Reset. The liver can convert certain amino acids, lactate, and glycerol into glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis. This helps prevent the body from breaking down muscle tissue for glucose and promotes the use of stored fats as an energy source.

This means that when the liver is unable to function correctly due to poor health the body can be forced to breakdown precious lean muscle tissue as an energy source rather than fat alone.

Hormone regulation: The liver is involved in the metabolism and regulation of various hormones, including insulin, glucagon, cortisol, and growth hormone. These hormones play crucial roles in fat storage, fat breakdown, and overall energy balance. An imbalance in these hormones can hinder fat loss efforts and lead to weight gain and make your weight loss and health efforts more difficult and more of a struggle than they need to be,

4. Ketogenesis

The liver is involved in the production of ketone bodies during a state of ketosis. Popularity of the keto diet has given ketones a fair bit of airtime .Put simply, ketones are a byproduct of fat metabolism and serve as an alternative energy source, particularly for the brain, during times of low carbohydrate availability. Ketosis can enhance fat loss by promoting the utilisation of stored fats as fuel.

In order to enter ketosis the liver must be in good health to work properly and efficiently. A sick liver can short live this process or add unnecessary side effects to the process.

5. Metabolic regulation

The liver acts as a central hub for metabolic regulation, integrating various signals and processes to maintain energy balance. It processes and stores nutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, and releases them into the bloodstream as needed. This ensures a steady supply of energy to the body and influences the balance between fat storage and fat breakdown.

As you would expect if the liver is unable to work optimally it cannot regulate metabolism efficiently, causing massive disruptions to energy levels manifesting as fatigue, sleepiness and brain fog.

6. Detoxification

Detoxification by the liver also includes detoxification of fat. The liver is the primary organ responsible for detoxifying and eliminating toxins from the body. It processes and removes metabolic waste products, environmental toxins, and drugs. When the liver is overloaded with toxins, its metabolic functions can be impaired, including the breakdown of fats. This can hinder fat loss efforts and contribute to weight gain.

When complete detoxification is prevented the liver is forced to store fat... and other toxic metabolites as it literally has no way of getting anything out.

The liver is responsible for over 500 functions in the body... and many of them include metabolism. So whilst we think of fat loss and energy production we need to include a healthy liver in the fat loss and energy equation.

𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙖 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙜𝙜𝙡𝙚.

Adopt a few super simple habits to add to your nutritional routine

Hydration using warm lemon water

Dark leafy vegetables that are rich in the super-antioxidant glutathione such as kale, spinach, mustard greens

Cruciferous Veggies such as caulifour broccoli, Brussel sprouts

Fatty fish - don't be afraid to use a good quality fish oil supplement to increase your omega 3's

Veggie Juices - celery, beetroot, Lemon (add some ACV to pimp it up a bit)

Teas such as green tea, milk, liquorice, peppermint, lemon and ginger (Twinnings do a fab version)

Supporting liver health through a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate hydration, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption can optimise its functions and enhance fat loss efforts.

MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is a flavour enhancer commonly used in many types of processed foods. While it's often associated with Chinese cuisine, it can be found in a wide variety of foods from gravies to soup mixes to custards and packaged meals and you wouldn’t even know it.

And whilst MSG is deemed 'safe 'by most food authorities, I strongly remind you to do your own personal research and listen to how your mind and body feel the next time you eat MSG containing foods. Remember what is SAFE for one person is not SAFE for another, we all have our own sensitives, you just need to pay attention and your body will let you know.

Here are some of the common symptoms to look out for

Headaches

Fatigue

Chest pain

Feeling flushed

Excessive and unpredictable sweating

Tightness of skin or pressure

Lack of feeling (numbness), tingling or burning in the face, neck and other areas.

Heart Palpitations

Fatigue

Feeling sick (nausea)

Here are nine surprising foods that contain MSG:

1. Canned Soups

Many canned soups, especially those labeled as "low-fat" or "reduced sodium," contain MSG to enhance their flavour (oh the things the food giants will do to get our hard earned dollars)

2. Chips and Snacks

Many types of chips and other snacks, including flavoured popcorn and snack mixes, contain MSG to enhance their taste.

3. Salad Dressings

Some types of salad dressings, including those labeled as "light" or "fat-free," contain MSG to improve their flavour.

4. Frozen Dinners

Many frozen dinners, including those labeled as "healthy" or "organic," or “low fat” or “low salt” contain MSG to enhance their taste and texture.

5. Seasoning Mixes

Many seasoning mixes, including those used for tacos, chilli, and other dishes, contain MSG to improve their flavour.

6. Processed Meats

Processed meats such as hot dogs, sausages, and deli meats often contain MSG to enhance their flavour and extend their shelf life aka ‘freshness'.

8. Canned Vegetables

Many canned vegetables, especially those that are pre-seasoned, contain MSG to improve their flavour.

9. Gravy and Sauces

Many types of gravy and sauces, including those used for pasta and meat dishes, contain MSG to enhance their flavour.

It's important to note that whilst MSG is 'considered' safe by many health authorities I strongly encourage you to use your own body and mind (and gut feeling) to make your own conclusion. As always if you suspect you do have some kind of sensitivity to it, use our free journal to document it so you can come to your own conclusions or book a one off appointment with us to help make sense of what is going on.

Your body and mind is individual. Respect it as such. The foods that work for someone else very well may not work for you and vice versa.

Getting comfortable with food labels and ingredients is a skill that is easy to master and and invaluable habit not to mention hugely empowering if you have kids. Next time you go to the supermarket get the kids involved by helping them educate themselves and you into what is in our food.

Of course in an ideal world always go for simple foods that haven't had little processing, but always look at the ingredients so you know exactly what you are eating, it is your birth right.

If you are sensitive to MSG or have concerns about its safety grab your free health journal here and start doing your own personalised research. It does not take long and the insights a food diary gives you is eyeopening....if not a bit scary

The good news is things are changing.

As the average consumer is growing wiser and more savvy, not to mention has access to lots of independent health practitioners, food manufacturers are taking note and updating their recipes to be more health (and consumer) friendly.

Let me know how you go

Six

Eating a sweet breakfast might sound what dreams are made of, but not if you are looking to lose fat, reduce the risk of disease, live a long life and reduce the risk of diabetes oh and increase productivity and focus, then you might want to consider a sweet breakfast.

When I talk about a sweet breakfast I am thinking of high GI, high carbohydrate choices. Examples include toast and sweet jam, croissants and jam, banana bread, and honey on toast.

Eating sugary breakfasts like these cause your body to actually store fat rather than burn it.

The reason it does this is to help balance the sugar in your blood, and for good reason. If you have very high blood sugar you are susceptible to a multitude of very undesirable health concerns including

Blurred vision

Headaches

Erectile dysfunction

Numbness and cold sensitivity in feet due to nerve damage

Damage to the vessels of your eyes, causing vision damage

Delay in healing

Blurred

Skin infections

Extreme hunger

Frequent peeing

Damage to your kidneys and blood vessels

Stomach and intestinal problems such as chronic constipation or diarrhea

Genital infections

For this reason, when you load your body with a high concentration of sugar, ie a sweet breakfast, your body begins to work to reduce the sugar in your blood and store it to prevent these symptoms.

The body stores this sugar as fat as a measure to save you from suffering adverse and sometimes devastating symptoms. Your body is simply trying to take care of you and keep you as safe as possible.

What's more, this response of fat storage is not limited to eating only a sweet breakfast. Eating a breakfast high in refined and overly processed carbohydrates such as white bread, croissants, and refined cereals such as cornflakes, have the same effect as those simple carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars, causing a sugar high.

The speed at which a food is processed and distributed into the blood is referred to as the Glycemic Index or GI.

Foods with a high GI cause a surge in blood sugar levels, causing the body to store this almost immediately into fat.

Foods of a low GI value however have a much more balanced and gradual effect on the body. As the sugars of the food are released gradually there is no need for the body to spring into action and balance them as they are already pretty balanced. The body is able to use these sugars on expending energy and is less likely to store them, resulting in little to no fat stores accumulating.

Isn't the body clever?

So what to do and what to eat at breakfast time.

The number one tip I give to my clients is to PLAN their breakfast. Don't get intimidated by the word "plan", it just means pre-think it so when you come downstairs in a hurry to get to work you know what you are eating and don't even consider a convenient grab-and-go sweet breakfast.

Some really easy suggestions are

Dense Wholewheat bread with almond butter (make sure the butter just contains almonds, not extra sugar or oil as that will defeat the purpose.

Hardboiled eggs. There is nothing easier than keeping hard-boiled eggs in the fridge so you can grab and go.

These are my fastest food option and they help me thrive. Cook up a batch and keep it in the fridge for unto 3 days. I suggest not peeling them till you need them to avoid smelling out the fridge.

Protein Isolate smoothie

I generally have 2 breakfasts every day to keep my metabolism revved up, one being protein isolate. However, if you are unable to do 2 breakfasts (this is principally for weight loss), then whizz up a smoothie using some protein isolate.

Smoothies can be a savior. You really can put anything in them. Frozen berries, soy milk, oat milk, cows milk, Supergreen powders, collagen...

Experiment with them, but as I said before having a plan.

What if you saw this re-emersion into life as a great opportunity to do a bit of a habit audit before you swing into your life again?

Rather than slipping back into Pre cover habits of 3 months ago have you considered if you actually want these habits back?
