how to change your habits

Happy July!

2023 has been one crazy year and we are still only half way through.

Our lives, routines, behaviours and patterns really have been transformed beyond recognition.

Whilst that doesn't seem great at first, it can be uplifting when you look at it through the lens of opportunity.

What would happen if  you looked at the disorder and lack of habit and routine over the last few months slightly different. What if you saw this re-emersion into life as a great opportunity to do a bit of a habit audit before you swing into your life again?

Rather than slipping back into Pre cover habits of 3 months ago have you considered if you actually want these habits back? Were they actually helping you get to where you want to go or where they perhaps holding you back?

By being intentional and going back into life on purpose you have the power to let back into your life what you actually want. If skipping lunch everyday was causing you gain belly fat, dont do it, if browsing social media every morning was making you compare yourself to others, get rid of it.

You have more power over your habits than you think, its as simple as knowing what you want + knowing how to get it.

Simply write down the habits you have and decide which ones are actually worth getting back or keeping.

Bad Habits

Eating dinner whilst watching TV
Skipping breakfast
Going to bed late

Good Habits

Getting a solid 8 hours of sleep
Drinking 2 litres of water a day
Getting to yoga 3 times a week

If you are stuck or need some inspiration ask yourself what you want for the next 6 months?

  • What do I want?
  • How do I feel?
  • Who do I look upto that seems they have it all?
  • What habits do I need to be this person?

Now you know the habits you needs, start to look at the habits you already have or are used to having in regular life.

Then ask  yourself a few questions about those habits?

  • Was _____ habit getting me closer to what I want?
  • Was _____habit in line with the person I want to be?
  • Was______habit a good use of my time?
  • Was______habit something that I am proud of?

Some examples I see in my practice almost daily include:

  • Talking negatively to ourselves, "I cant do this, I am not good enough"
  • Eating dinner in front of the TV - leads to overeating + poor digestion + weight gain
  • Eating on the run - weight gain, cramps, indigestion
  • Checking social media when you first wake up - can lead to subconscious feelings of comparison  and "not good enough" feelings
  • Putting food in your mouth just because it is there or out of boredom or because you are "cleaning up" your kid's' leftovers
  • Drinking alcohol just because the clock says its time, not because you actually want it

The list goes on

Take this once in a lifetime opportunity to re-enter life on your terms, in alignment with what you want your life to be.

If you want to get fit, recreate the life of a fit person, make the choices a fit person would. Use this as your gift to realise all your dreams.

Sure the bad habits will try and weadle their way in, but if you start with the foundation of knowing what habits are actually good for you, you are already further ahead than you think.
